Russia and Ukraine began a localized ceasefire on Tuesday to permit a humanitarian operation in Oleshky. The truce allows aid deliveries and evacuations in the frontline town, which faces shortages of food and medicine.

The Russian defense ministry announced on Telegram that shelling toward the city of Kherson stopped at 4 a.m. Moscow time, or 1 a.m. GMT. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's parliament commissioner for human rights, confirmed the start of the pause in a Facebook post. He stated that the Ukrainian side is honoring its commitments as head of the negotiating team.

Oleshky sits on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region. It lies directly across from the city of Kherson, which remains under Ukrainian control. Russian forces captured the town in the first days of the February 2022 invasion and have maintained control since then.

The White House noted last week that US First Lady Melania Trump helped secure the agreement. The pause in fighting comes while conflict continues elsewhere. A Russian missile attack on Kyiv on Monday killed at least one person and injured 10, including students in a dormitory.

The Monday strikes also caused deaths and injuries in Kharkiv and Pavlohrad. New explosions were reported in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, according to a Reuters witness.
